With their departure comes the start of Expedition 57 and a new space station commander.

The Expedition 57 crew members aboard the International Space Station spent the week conducting science and preparing for the return of Japan’s HTV-7 and for the arrival of next month’s Northrup Grumman’s Cygnus space freighter, which will take a three-day trip in space before it is captured with the Canadarm2 and berthed to the station.

The Northrup Grumman Cygnus resupply flight 10 (CRS-10), scheduled to launch to the International Space Station in mid-November, includes several tons of crew supplies and science experiments ranging from 3D printing and recycling to simulating the creation of celestial bodies from stardust.

Piers Sellers was an accomplished NASA astronaut and scientist. He walked in space six times and revolutionized our understanding of Earth’s climate. After battling pancreatic cancer, Piers passed away in 2016. He is dearly missed by the entire NASA community, and especially by his longtime best friend, fellow Earth scientist Compton Tucker.
